Solution strategies and gender differences in spatial visualization tasks

چکیده
This study examined solution strategies and gender differences in a Spatial Visualization (Vz) task. Two kinds of strategies, analytic and holistic or spatial manipulation, were operationalized by a self-report questionnaire and three time based variables obtained in a comp uterized form board task, the R-E. The variables were: time of initial encoding of the target stimulus, duration of processes that follow the first encoding, including visual comparisons and mental movements, and total time for each item. Seventyfive women and 77 men completed Vz tests, the R-E and the self-report measure. Neither level of Vz in marker tests nor gender were associated with strategy choice.

Gender effects in spatial orientation: cognitive profiles and mental strategies
Experimental evidence and meta-analyses offer some support for gender-related differences in visuo-spatial ability. However, few studies addressed this issue in an ecological context and/or in everyday tasks implying spatial abilities, such as geographical orientation. Moreover, the relation of specific strategies and gender is still unclear. In the present investigation, we compared men and wo...
متن کاملGender differences in brain activation patterns during mental rotation and number related cognitive tasks
Gender differences in the visuo-spatial and mathematical cognitive domain seem to rely on the preferences for different cognitive strategies. Such differences may involve or reflect different neural circuits. In this study three number related tasks and a mental rotation fMRI-paradigm were used to examine whether different brain activation and performance patterns could be observed between gend...
متن کاملVisuospatial anatomy comprehension: the role of spatial visualization ability and problem-solving strategies.
The present study explored the problem-solving strategies of high- and low-spatial visualization ability learners on a novel spatial anatomy task to determine whether differences in strategies contribute to differences in task performance. The results of this study provide further insights into the processing commonalities and differences among learners beyond the classification of spatial visu...
متن کاملGender differences in spatial visualization among engineering students
Spatial visualization of engineering students is of greatest importance in terms of their professional achievement, thus evaluation of this skill is essential. Mental Cutting Test (MCT) is one of the most widely used evaluation method for spatial abilities. In this study we present an analysis of MCT results of first-year engineering students, with special emphasis on gender differences. Simila...
متن کاملCharacterizing and Improving Spatial Visualization Skills
visualization skills demonstrate that there are differences in skill levels between students who are potential majors and those who are not, suggesting that students may self-select geology as a major based on their visualization abilities before significant course work. Students in introductory geology courses with very poor spatial skills are more likely to receive poor final course grades th...
